Kana Hanazawa, Takayuki Yamada, Yui Ogura, Yuto Uemura and others will appear! Short animation “Bread’s Baby” released ♪ A 0-year-old baby is in charge of the cry

The main video of the original short animation “Bread’s Baby” planned and produced by CHOCOLATE was released on YouTube and the work’s official X (formerly Twitter) on December 6, 2024. The cast includes voice actors who love bread, including Kana Hanazawa, Yui Ogura, Yuto Uemura, and Naomi Ozora, as well as Takayuki Yamada.

“Bread Babies” is a short animation set in a small bakery in the city and depicts how “bread babies”, the dough for cream bread, donuts, French bread, etc., work together to fight off a thief.

Utilizing 3DCG, the texture of bread dough is realistically reproduced. The film was directed by Haruka Ichikawa, who made this her directorial debut, Kanta Mochida was the CG director, and R!k! was in charge of character design.

Kana Hanazawa, who plays the main role and double role, as well as Yui Ogura, Yuto Uemura, and Naomi Ozora, four bread-loving voice actors, are playing the role of the cream bread baby. In addition, Chika Tanabe (Borujuku) will play the role of the donut baby, Kuya Koyamata (Yabai T-Shirt Shop) will play the role of the French bread baby, Takayuki Yamada will play the role of the croissant baby, Tayu Koume will play the role of the cat, and Yusuke Iwasaki will play the role of the thief. A diverse cast of actors will enliven the event.

In the main video that was recently released, there is also a scene that recreates the realistic “baby bread cry” with the help of 0-year-old babies Megumi Takahashi and Mochida Mochida. The ending song that colors the end of the work was created by Mashinomi and Yohji Igarashi. Upon its release, comments were received from the production team, including Ichikawa, who planned and directed the film. The bread animation is ready! The short length of about 4 minutes is filled with the thoughts of many people, like the cream on a cream bun. I am truly grateful to Mr. R!k!, who worked with me on the character design through trial and error, and to Mr. Mochida, Mr. Yamada, Mr. Kubota, and Mr. Kanayama, who paid close attention to the CG animation until the very end. I would be happy if as many people as possible could fall in love with our breads.

3DCG is a hollow world of Haribote. In such a 3DCG world, there are various processes to make it look like it is alive and well. The most important of these is animation. This video is the result of working with four animators, including myself, to animate it every day, like kneading bread, and bring it to life. Please take a look. Perhaps, just like animators, the local bakeries are also giving life to breads every day.

Of course, it was my first time designing a character for bread, especially baby bread. It took a lot of trial and error to transform a baby from a blank piece of dough (often with no clothes or limbs) to a baby that everyone would love. As I continued to draw Pan’s figures and gestures, thinking, “This one has Pan’s eyes” and “This Pan is supposed to run like this,” I feel like I started to develop a kind of affinity for Pan. I was overwhelmed with emotion when I saw the successfully completed video! Please enjoy the brave appearance of the babies!

Thanks to the actors and the CG team, movements and expressions that give you a sense of the characters’ individuality are scattered throughout! If you pay attention to those aspects, you might enjoy it even more! Even when I was going through some tough times, I was always comforted by these characters. I think this is a work filled with the commitment of many staff members, including director Ichikawa. Please be healed by the bread babies!

I will never forget the wave (?) I felt when I was shown the V-Con for the first time. Being immersed in the madness of Haruka Ichikawa in such an intense way made me feel like I could live my life to the fullest. I’m really interested in how everyone feels after reading it, as I feel like it varies from person to person.

The title and concept of “Baby Bread,” the process from leaven to bread that has not yet been baked, was so cute that I was immediately drawn to it when I heard about it.
I started working on the ending song with Mashinomi before the video was completed, but when I saw the completed work, I found myself liking the song, which had a strange sense of balance to it. I’m also grateful for being included in the credits along with the wonderful voice actors and production staff.

“How about a project like this where bread is the main character…” Director Ichikawa asked me one day to talk about this anime. And every night he drew pictures, connected them, and showed them to me. It looked super delicious and I had a feeling it would make a cute anime.
My hunch was correct. The animators put so much love and attention into every detail, and the voices of all the wonderful people who voiced it felt like a dream, and I feel like the characters have come to life. I’m sure that even when I become a grandma, I’ll still be laughing at this anime over and over again.
