Produced by Tonko House, an animation studio based in Ishikawa Prefecture, it won two Annie Awards, known as the Academy Awards of animation, and won three individual awards at the Emmy Awards, the highest honor in the American television world. This work was created by the founder of Tonko House, which has studios in Berkeley, California and Kanazawa City, Ishikawa Prefecture, and was active as an art director at Pixar Animation Studios.Daisuke Tsutsumiis the original idea and director. Onari is a tomboyish girl who lives a free-spirited life in a world of gods and monsters that appear in Japanese folk tales. He admires legendary heroes and trains hard to become a new hero, but his father, Narudon, is a strange god and won’t teach him anything. As the threat of ONI, feared by mountain gods since ancient times, approaches, Onari must face the truth about herself that she does not know yet.
●What is animation studio “Tonko House”?
An animation studio co-founded in Berkeley, California in July 2014 by Daisuke Tsutsumi and Robert Kondo, who were art directors at Pixar, after co-directing the short film “Dam Keeper” in 2014.
The Dam Keeper was nominated for the 87th Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film in 2015, won 25 other awards, and was screened at 75 film festivals around the world. In 2017, director Eric Oh’s “Pig – Dam Keeper on the Hill” was distributed on Hulu in Japan, and is a popular work that was also broadcast on NHK after its distribution.
In 2023, the Netflix series “ONI” won two awards at the Annie Awards, which are known as the “Academy Awards of animation.” It also won three Emmy Awards. Since 2019, he has also set up a studio in Kanazawa City, Ishikawa Prefecture, and produces works from two locations in Japan and the United States. In addition to creating works, he is also active in a variety of fields, including holding exhibitions, events, and workshops.
