Is this work composed of “Nitz Island” game footage an “animated movie”? [Ryota Fujitsu’s Anime Gate V 113 times]
Welcome back to the I Am Anime website
I’m thinking about “shot movies (video)” and “cut movies (video).”
It all started on November 30th when I appeared on stage at the movie “Nitz Island: Inhuman Report” and talked a little about the attractive points of the movie.
“Nitz Island” is a documentary based on the online game “DayZ.” This game, whose theme is to survive at all costs in a world infested with zombies, is highly imitative of reality; if you don’t eat, you’ll die, and if you don’t take measures to deal with your physical condition, you’ll die. . Food and medicine must also be procured locally. As a result, it is an extremely brutal game where the “life hack” that “attacking someone who has something is most efficient” is effective.
A French documentary crew took part in DayZ and spent 963 hours filming the documentary. That is this work. Director Ekiem and his team aim to get closer to the people who participate in the game and their communities. Therefore, this work is made up only of the “online game footage” shot by the crew (to be exact, there are a few scenes where footage from the real world is inserted, but it only accounts for about 1% of the time) .
I learned about “Nitz Island” last year when it was screened at the Yamagata International Documentary Film Festival (winning the Special Jury Prize). Around the same time, I got to see this film as a member of the selection committee for the Niigata International Animation Film Festival. It was a very interesting work, so I talked about it when I had the chance, and as a result I was asked to contribute to a pamphlet, and I ended up giving a talk as well.
The talk on the 30th was held in the form of staff from the distribution company asking me questions. There was a question: “Is this an animated movie?” This question is quite natural.
“Nits Island” is composed of footage from online games, so the look of the screen is “a little cheap 3DCG animation.” There is a large amount of information about the texture of objects, so long shots of landscapes look close to real life. However, when looking at people’s movements, their foot contact with the terrain is not that precise, and the effects are simple. When you notice things like that, it becomes clear that this is just a game screen. However, even if it is “cheap”, the characters show a variety of movements, and there is no doubt that the image is made up of this.
