The 48th Japan Academy Awards, which honors movies released in Japan in 2024 and those involved, announced the winners and works in 15 categories and the New Actor Award. The “Excellent Animation Award” was awarded to “Ganbatte Imashoi”, “Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM”, “Haikyu the Movie!! Battle at the Garbage Dump”, and “Detective Conan the Movie: The Million Dollar Five-Ringed Star”. )” and “Look Back” won the award.
The Japan Academy Awards are Japanese film awards that have been held every year since 1978, and were established to improve and develop Japanese film art, technology, and science. For the 48th Japan Academy Awards, films that will be released between January 1st and December 31st, 2024, and that meet criteria such as number of screenings and duration, will be eligible for selection.
Among them, the “Excellent Animated Work Award” goes to “Ganbatte Imashoi”, “Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM”, “Haikyuu the Movie!! Battle at the Garbage Dump”, and “Detective Conan the Movie: The Million Dollar Five Star Star”. ” and “Look Back” were selected.
“Ganbatte Imashoi” is based on the masterpiece youth novel by Ryoko Shikimura, who won the “Bocchan Literary Award” in 1995, which was made into a live-action film in 1998 and a drama in 2005. It’s a theatrical anime. Set in Matsuyama City, Ehime Prefecture, which is rich in nature, it vividly depicts the growth and life-sized fluctuations of the hearts of high school girls who devoted their youth to the rowing club.
“Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM” is a completely new work that has been long-awaited by fans of the “Mobile Suit Gundam SEED” series, which has celebrated its 20th anniversary since its broadcast. A continuation of the TV series, set in the era CE (Cosmic Era), where there are humans who have adjusted their genes and are born with superior physical abilities and brains (Coordinators) and humans who are born naturally (Naturals). The story unfolded in CE75.
“Haikyuu!! The Movie: Battle at the Garbage Dump” is based on Haruichi Furudate’s monumental sports manga, “Haikyuu!! This is the movie version of “. It depicts one of the most popular stories in the original work, the battle between Karasuno High School and Nekoma High School, known as the “Battle at the Garbage Dump” in the third round of Spring High School.
“Detective Conan the Movie: The Million Dollar Five Star” is a mystery manga by Gosho Aoyama that has been serialized in Weekly Shonen Sunday since 1994 and will celebrate its 30th anniversary in 2024. This is the 27th theatrical version of the movie. With Kaitou Kid and Heiji Hattori as key players, a “Treasure Battle Mystery” unfolds in Hakodate, Hokkaido.
“Look Back” is a theatrical anime based on the manga by Tatsuki Fujimoto, who has worked on popular works such as “Fire Punch” and “Chainsaw Man,” and is also preparing to release the theatrical animation “Chainsaw Man Rezehen.” This is a heart-breaking coming-of-age story that follows the growth of two girls, Fujino and Kyomoto, who are connected by their single-minded love for manga, and depicts a shocking event that shatters everything that happens one day.

The 48th Japan Academy Awards ceremony will be held at the Grand Prince Hotel New Takanawa in Tokyo on March 14th, and the grand prize winner will be announced on the spot. The Best Animation Award goes to Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM, Haikyu the Movie: Battle at the Garbage Dump, Detective Conan the Movie: Million Dollar Star, and Look Back. It will be interesting to see which of these works will win the honor and the future of the grand prize.
