No. 874 The charm of Dezaki Conte (1)

Welcome back to the I Am Anime website

I bought “Futari no Black Jack – Manga & Anime Storyboard/Competition Collection” (Author: Osamu Tezuka + Osamu Dezaki)!!

Do you know how long I’ve been waiting for its release? This is a dream-like book that combines Osamu Tezuka’s original work and the OVA version of “Black Jack” director Osamu Izaki’s storyboards into one book! If you think there’s a reason why I don’t buy it, please let me know! So, of course, Amazon.
It arrived the other day and I was so excited!
Compared to other anime directors, Director Dezaki’s storyboards have fewer opportunities to be seen by the public. Is it like the storyboard collection that came as a bonus with the DVD-BOX of “AIR the Movie” or “CLANNAD the Movie”? Afterwards, several pages of each part were published in the “Snow Queen” DVD package and the booklet of the “Pia DVD-BOOK” series, which had been released continuously until recently. In addition, this is also a partial page to explain the “uniqueness” of Izaki’s special features in anime magazines and books…
So, what is the “uniqueness” that clearly sets him apart from other anime directors?

The drawing is scribbled and very “rough”!!

That’s what it means. I understand that there are many fans who would be thrilled to see detailed storyboards created by other anime directors that can be used directly as a base for layouts, and say, “Wow!” when they are published in a book. Even so, it is deeply saddening that most of Dezaki’s storyboards, which boasted so many stories during his lifetime, have not been published in books until now. When I was in high school, I would go around the old bookstores around Denmacho and Tsurumai Park in Nagoya, and whenever I found even a single page in a used anime magazine, I would scrap it. That’s how much I wanted Dezaki Conte!

And this is a rare “book version of Dezaki Conte”!!

Just by flipping through it, I can already feel the heat in the brush strokes (tears of emotion)! That’s exactly why Izaki’s storyboards give you a feeling that you can’t get no matter how precisely drawn the storyboards of other directors are (or read).

And before we talk about that, let’s go back to checking. Sorry it’s short (sweat).
