No. 881 Another good book!
Welcome back to the I Am Anime website
I bought director Rintaro’s “My life in 24 frames per second”!
It’s like Rintaro’s version of “Manga Michi”, and for someone like me who doesn’t find fiction or made-up stories interesting, what interests me the most is this kind of “manga adaptation of a true story”.
I have watched almost all of Rintaro’s films. I like the movie version of “Galaxy Express 999” as well as the feature films such as “Genma Taisen”, “Sword of Kamuy”, “Phoenix Chapter”, and “X”, but I personally like the first episode of the TV series “Ganbare Genki”. I love it. At the time, TV series, whether cheap or bad, were commonplace, and this is a film that carefully expresses the clear intention of “I want to make this kind of screen! And this is what I want to see myself!” cut by cut. I think it’s a good movie that I can watch over and over again.
For me, Rintaro anime makes me want to watch it over and over again. When I saw “Metropolis” in theaters when it was released, I honestly thought, “What do you think?”, but when I realized the result, I bought the special edition DVD-BOX with Rin’s storyboards, and even more I later bought it again on Blu-ray.
Don’t watch it to enjoy the thrilling spectacle, but to “enjoy the art of painting!” That is the real pleasure of director Rintaro’s work!
That being said, I still revisit it regularly. Reviews of director Rintaro’s works since the Kadokawa anime have been mixed, but personally I’m on the “familiar” side as a movie, but as a Rintaro work I’m more on the “approval” side. After all, the fact that I’ve been watching it over and over again even though I’ve complained about various things, means I’m hooked on the director’s tricks.
I only had a few near misses (?) with Director Rintaro. First of all, when I left Telecom (Animation Film) and became a freelancer, my first job was the original illustration for Hajime no Ippo, so I often went in and out of Madhouse. As I was chatting with Katsuya Yamada, a classmate of mine when I was a student there, I saw Director Rintaro passing by behind me! It was natural that Yamada-kun at the time was a member of the Rintaro team, working on mechanical designs for “SPACE PIRATE HERLOCK” (2002) and original drawings for “48×61” (2004 “Steam Boy” DVD bonus OVA). Directly there was “Director Rin’s room”.
After that, I assisted with the original drawing for the 10th episode of SPACE PIRATE HERLOCK, which I mentioned earlier, but I was not able to meet director Rin. Afterwards, we passed each other at the year-end party at Madhouse. Director Rin arrived late, but I still remember the great aura he had as soon as he appeared, saying, “Rin-san is here!” and completely changed the atmosphere in the large venue.
