Latvian up-and-coming director Ginz Gilbarodis’s latest animated film, Flow, won the 97th Academy Award for Best Animation. It was announced on March 2, 2025 (local time), and won the Oscar honor, beating the major Hollywood film.

“Flow” is an animated film that begins with a cat decides to leave his place as the world is surrounded by a huge flood and the city is about to disappear.
The cat is hit by an unexpected event or unexpected crisis with animals riding on a boat that flows through. However, gradually, friendship begins to develop within them and become stronger. Can they really change their destiny? And what is at the end of this adventure?

This is the latest film by Latvian up-and-coming director Ginz Gilbarodis. Despite its extremely independent structure, with a production cost of 3.5 million euros (approximately 550 million yen) and staff of less than 50 people, it won an Oscar for a record-breaking record of major Hollywood studios. It won a big surprise award that will change the history of animated films.

It was also the first ever film nominated for the Academy Awards for Best Feature Animation, which won the award in Latvia, the director’s country of origin.
