It has been announced on the program’s official website and other media that voice actor Mizuki Nana will be appearing in the currently airing NHK Taiga drama “Berabou: Tsuta Shige Eikano Yume Story” (every Sunday at 8pm, NHK). As this is his first appearance in NHK Taiga drama, fans have been receiving congratulations on his own career.
“Berabou – Tsuta Shige Eikano Yume Story” is the 64th NHK Taiga drama that began airing on January 5th, 2025. Actor Yokohama Ryusei will star in the lead role, and the story will be woven with an original script that is not based on the original work, set in the mid-Edo period.
Mizuki Nana will play Chie Naiko, a female kyoka artist from the Tenmei period.
According to the program’s official website, “Sume is the wife of Motokiami (James Onoda), the owner of the bathhouse, and has the side of the crazy name “Chie Uchiko.” He leads Tenmei Kyoka with his husband. Tsuta Shige (Yokohama Ryusei) meets and deepens his friendship with a kyoka club in which Ota Minamiue (Kiritani Kenta) and her husband Motokiami and others participate in.” She is a character related to the song that is typical of Mizuki Nana, who is also known as a “diva” who has appeared in the NHK Kouhaku Uta Gassen.
But what kind of people do those kyokas actually refer to?
Kyoka is a genre that means “crazy waka,” and seems to refer to tanka poems that deviate from traditional waka norms. Although it is composed of traditional sounds such as 5, 7, 5, 7, and 7, it does not require seasonal words, and is mainly about social satire, sarcasm, humor, etc. In the sense that sometimes includes political criticism, it seems to be closer to rap.
A kyoka master is a poet who writes the waka poet. The title of this work, “Berabou – Tsuta Shige Eikano Yume no Yume Story,” contains the meanings of “dors of the times,” such as “stupid,” “unlocked,” and “unlocked,” so kyoka-san, who is freed from traditional norms and provides the most entertainment, is the perfect character for this work.
Mizuki Nana herself has also received comments about this role on the program’s official website.
Is it possible that I’m in a Taiga drama? ! I was really surprised when you called out to me.
Chie Naiko was one of the few female koreans, and by singing poems with a sharp and sense of humor, she connected with a wide range of people across status, and created fun that would make her smile in an age where there was little entertainment. Expressing words, bringing smiles and smiling through songs is a part that connects me to my activities as a voice actor and singer, and I am honored to have been able to have a role that I have a great connection with.
It’s the first time I’ve had enough, so I’m constantly feeling nervous, but I’ll be doing it with all my might!
At the same time as Mizuki Nana, new performers have also been announced Takaoka Saki, James Onoda, Hyoroku, Nakagawa Tsubasa, Enari Kazuki, and Takahashi Hideki.
