Director Miyazaki Hayao (the official name for “Saki” is “Tatsusaki”) Studio Ghibli’s latest film, “How Do You Live?” will finally be broadcast on Friday Roadshow on May 2nd.

This film, which was produced by director Miyazaki for the first time in 10 years since “The Wind Rises,” was revealed only through poster visuals when it was released in July 2023, with the desire to “enjoy the film without preconceived notions.” When it was released, it became a hot topic and became a huge hit. Furthermore, when it was released nationwide in December 2013, it ranked number one in the weekend box office rankings. He also won the 81st Golden Globe Award for Best Animated Film and the 96th Academy Award for Best Animated Feature Film, achieving the second Oscar win. It was the highest worldwide box office gross of any Studio Ghibli film.

This film is said to challenge the image of a protagonist, which has not been portrayed in previous directors’ works. In traditional Ghibli works, the film often focuses on cheerful, energetic girls and boys with a strong sense of justice, while the main character of this film, Masato, appears as a boy who lives with mixed emotions within his mind.
Masato is an 11-year-old boy who has lost his beloved mother and is confused by his relationship with his new mother, Natsuko, and is unable to fit in with his new school. Although he is a child, he is struggling with a variety of emotions and struggling, but is trying to live a straightforward life.

Director Miyazaki said that Masato was portrayed based on his memories of his childhood. It is also a boy with a mental conflict that everyone experiences to a greater or lesser extent, such as worries about his relationship with his parents or confusion about his own emotions.

Masato, a life-size boy from such a sensitive period, is led by a blue heron and wanders into another world. It is a masterpiece fantasy work that explores a world where life and death are mixed together.

The following week, May 9th, “Red Pig” was broadcast. “The pig that doesn’t fly is just a pig,” this film features such a famous line, and is a studio Ghibli-like work that packs romance and adventure into the sky. When you board the plane, you can see various works on the monitor in front of you, but this work was originally planned as a short animation for in-flight screenings by Japan Airlines.

Director Miyazaki, who has been making feature-length theatrical animations since “Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind,” said he wanted to create easy-to-use pieces to refresh his staff. The original idea is the manga “The Age of Flying Boats,” published by the director himself in a model magazine. As I came up with a story from this hobby-filled original idea, the idea grew and became a theatrical release.

It is packed with the charms of Studio Ghibli works, including director Miyazaki’s lineup of airplanes full of hobbies and detailed animations that make you feel the wind flying through the sky.
To commemorate the first broadcast of “How Do You Live?”, a Ghibli special will be broadcast from 3:55pm on Tuesday, April 29th (national holiday). The synopsis of the work, as well as unique characters including the main character Masato, are introduced, including film footage. We also look back at Director Miyazaki’s footsteps so far and explore the appeal of “How Do You Live?”

Furthermore, Yamatoki Satoma, who voiced the role of Masato, visited the hotly talked about Ghibli Park (Nagakute City, Aichi Prefecture). Visit the exhibitions and valuable materials at the park facility where you can experience the world of Studio Ghibli works.
